Do I have to interview in person? Yes, because interviewing in person will allow you to present yourself in the best possible manner. This also gives the senior staff interview team an opportunity to see you at your best. Interviews are held over the Christmas break. If for some reason you can't interview at that time, reasonable accommodations will be made to meet with you before January 10, but meeting with the entire team gives you the best possible chance of being part of the GDC staff. Come to interviews well dressed, well groomed, well rested, and prepared to show why you should be part of the GDC staff. How do I prepare for an interview? Fill out and submit an application to the camp director well before your interview. As mentioned earlier, come to interviews with a "can do" attitude, well dressed, well groomed, well rested, and prepared to show why you should be part of the GDC staff. What if I cannot attend the spring staff meeting because of a school conflict? Although everyone is required to be at the meeting, pre-arranged school commitments take precedent over camp activities. We want you to be successful at camp AND school. Most school events are posted on the district or campus schedule months in advance, sometimes up to a year. It is your responsibility to communicate, in writing, any possible conflicts with the camp director at interviews. If you find that you must miss the meeting, you must get approval before the meeting, in writing. What if I have a conflict with attending the spring staff meeting for reasons that are not necessarily school related? Those types of instances will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Regardless of the reason, if you have a conflict, you should strive to attend as much of meeting as possible. You will need to discuss the conflict with the camp director. What if I cannot attend staff week training? Staff week training is critical to your success during the summer. If you are a new applicant and cannot attend, you will not be able to be part of the GDC staff. If you are a returning staff member and there are extenuating circumstances, you may be excused from the weeklong training. Those types of instances will be handled on a case-by-case basis after discussion with the camp director, but there have only been two people excused from staff week in the past ten years. If I was on staff last year, do I have to fill out an application and interview again? Yes to both questions although a returning staff member may fill out a shorter application but still must interview. If I was on staff last year, do I get any special consideration for employment? Veteran staff members are required to interview but will be given the appropriate consideration for their experience, but keeping in mind that seniority does not refer to a greater level of entitlement, but a higher expectation of responsibility and leadership. How many positions are open for this coming season? All positions are open. Everyone must reapply for staff unless they were invited to return prior to formal interviews. What does it take to be part of the GDC Staff? Commitment of both time and an attitude of, "I want to be there for others." Staffing at GDC is more of a lifestyle than a 9-5 job. What factors determine whether or not I make the GDC staff? Evaluation of all staff, new and returning, will include, but are not limited to: talent, skill, physical condition, attendance, participation, maturity, work ethic, loyalty, stamina, and attitude. Staff members must be positive, respectful, and always put the group first. It is not how much you know that matters, but how much you care. It is a rare staff member who starts the season with all the knowledge and ability to be 100% successful. It is willingness and capacity to improve that distinguishes the good from the great. Prospective members must demonstrate their willingness to be part of a group and be a tolerant caring person. Regardless of age, demonstration of maturity will mean a lot. Regardless of the fact that you may, or may not earn a spot on staff, we want to make sure that you have the knowledge and tools necessary to learn from the interview process. Who are the GDC staff members? Gardner Dam is committed to "developing lifelong excellence in young people through a superior and challenging work ethic and service to others though the Boy Scout program." Serving (not working) on the GDC staff is a demanding yet highly rewarding experience. What if I have a conflict with attending all weeks of camp for reasons that are not necessarily school related? Those types of instances will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Regardless of the reason, if you have a camp conflict you should strive to attend as much of camp as possible. If someone else is equally skilled and can attend the entire summer, they will be given first priority in the hiring process. You will need to discuss the conflict with the camp director at interviews. How can I begin to prepare for an interview for next year? The best preparation is actually going through the process this year. Even if you don't think you have a chance, we recommend you give it your best effort. You will no doubt learn a great deal about yourself and the process.
